Welcome to Hillsborough
One of the most affluent neighborhoods in America
Hillsborough is as beautiful as it is luxurious. The city has long been the home of San Francisco's upper class, as it was founded by an affluent shipping magnate. Since its founding, gorgeous mansions have been constructed throughout the city. Titans of the industry built their homes here, often hiring world-renowned architects. One of the most unique things about this city is its zero commercial zonings. The entire city is 100% residential.
What to Love
- Pleasant Mediterranean climate
- More rural feel than other cities in the Bay Area
- Tight-knit community
- Phenomenal landscaping and gardens
- Easy access to downtown San Francisco and Silicon Valley
Local Lifestyle
Hillsborough is a small, close-knit community. With a population of around 11,500, neighbors tend to get to know each other quite well. There is plenty of open space in the city, much of which is protected from new developments. There is no shortage of areas to go walking or jogging in areas that are well-shaded by mature trees.
Dining, Entertainment, Shopping
As Hillsborough has strict zoning regulations on commercial real estate, most shopping and dining will have to be done in neighboring Burlingame. The shops at
Burlingame Avenue present a wonderful opportunity to explore boutiques and dine at high-end restaurants.
Just south of Burlington Avenue is
Broadway. This commercial district was designed in the 1950s, and still resembles much of that decade's charm. Nighttime is a great time to visit, as the street is illuminated with neon signs from a bygone era.
The Hillsdale Shopping Center is in neighboring San Mateo and resembles a traditional shopping mall. Inside you will find Nordstrom and other higher-end retailers.
It's no secret that Hillsborough has beautiful geography, which demands a beautiful golf course. That is accomplished with the stunning
Crystal Springs Golf Course. The golf course has some beautiful waterfronts due to the neighboring reservoir. Membership is not required to book a tee time.
If you are looking for a more exclusive golfing experience, the
Burlingame Country Club is an excellent choice. The country club offers more than just golf, as they also provide a spa, pool, dog park, pickleball, and fishing. Membership is by invitation only.
Things to Do
Hillsborough is full of grand mansions, and
Carolands Chateau may be the grandest of them all. The estate looks well suited to serve a European monarch. This shouldn't be surprising when looking into the mansion's history, as many world-renowned European architects were involved in its design. Tours of the mansion are available but are wildly popular. A lottery system is used due to high demand.
This part of the Bay Area is full of wonderful events, but one of our favorites is the
Hillsborough Concours D'Elegance. If you have an appreciation for fine automotive elegance, then you'll love this car show. The show includes participants from around the area as well as some out-of-town participants. The event is divided across multiple days and showcases both classic and cutting-edge vehicles. The most recent Best in Show winner was the 1932 Chrysler Imperial LeBaron CL.
